Several recent studies show that one of the main causes of urban road infastructurii degradation is to overload heavy vehicles. Whether they carry goods, construction or waste materials from civil engineering works, a good portion of the carriers overloads the vehicles they operate, in a desire to save time and money.

In addition to the risk of accidents (a weight of the load greater than that specified for the type of motor vehicle, the braking distance is increased and overrides all mechanical systems and subassemblies above the normal limits), another direct consequence is the impact of road infrastructure. Especially in very warm days, when the asphalt carpet changes its elasticity, additional pressure leads to the appearance of bumps or pits.

The solution proposed by Direct One company consists of an automatic weighing system of motor vehicles entering the city, on the go, and sending alarms in case of vehicle detection that are overloaded.
In addition, it is possible to detect and exceed of the gauge required for certain road passages. The system involves the installation of inductive loops in the running path, on each lane of movement on the sense of entry into the city, of special weight sensors as well as specialized camcorders.

Alarms (each alarm may contain a warning message, photo of the target vehicle, time of passing, etc.) are sent either to a dispatch or directly to a mobile crew that can drive the vehicle with an outlined gauge to a high precission station, authorised for static weighing.
In the event of the extension/correlation of the proposed system with a way of tracking the access permits in certain areas of the city (for heavy traffic), it is possible to manage the payment of access fees and to respect periods of prohibition, in restricted areas, by categories of tonnage.

For the proper operation of the system, the specialised video cameras must be placed in a certain position/angle above each lane, at a predefined distance from the inductive loops and the weight sensors placed in road infrastructure. In order to achieve this location of the video cameras, there is a need for a supportive structure across the road- either a metallic portal structure, a metal bracket anchored by side pillars or a bunk passage (road bridge, path bridge railways, etc.).

By implementing the system described above, citizens of the municipality of Alba Iulia will benefit from a safer road infrastructure by reducing the risk of road accidents caused by the precarious state of running. Moreover, by reducing road repair expenses, the municipality will be able to allocate larger funds to modernise other urban arteries, thus leading to the transformation of Alba Iulia into a modern, european city, with an efficient and safe road infrastructure.
